Expanding the Marine Economic Development Space

Expanding the Marine Economic Development Space. With the goal of becoming a cargo transshipment hub for Southeast Asia through strategic transport corridors. Quang Tri Province is mobilizing significant resources to invest in deep-sea ports and interregional transport infrastructure. This is regarded as a crucial step to integrate the locality into international logistics supply chains and promote sustainable marine economic development.

Accelerating the Development of Key Seaports

According to the Vietnam Maritime and Inland Waterways Administration. The seaport system in the North Central region plays a pivotal role in shaping international cargo transport routes. Along with Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces. Quang Tri is identified as a maritime “gateway” to the sea for northeastern Thailand.

Prior to the administrative merger, both former Quang Binh and Quang Tri provinces prioritized upgrading existing ports such as Hon La, Cua Gianh, and Cua Viet. However, these ports are relatively small in scale, with limited capacity and mainly handling bulk cargo.

A major turning point was the groundbreaking of Hon La International General Port. With a total investment of nearly VND 2.3 trillion. Phase 1 is expected to be completed in 2026, capable of accommodating vessels of up to 70,000 tons as well as large cruise ships. Phase 2 will further increase the port’s capacity to receive vessels of up to 100,000 tons.

Meanwhile, the My Thuy Deep-Sea Port project in Quang Tri is being developed on a scale of 685 hectares, with a total investment exceeding VND 14 trillion. The project includes 10 berths developed in three phases, with berth No.1 scheduled to come into operation in early 2026. Expanding the Marine Economic Development Space.

Construction Progress Accelerated from Early 2026

In the early days of 2026, construction activities at key seaport projects in Quang Tri have been carried out at an accelerated pace. At Hon La International General Port, dredging of navigation channels, berth construction. And land reclamation are being implemented simultaneously, with berth No.1 reaching approximately 80% completion.

In the southern part of the province, construction of the My Thuy Deep-Sea Port is also being fast-tracked. According to the project developer, the target is to put all four berths of Phase 1 into operation by 2027. Creating strong momentum for marine economic growth and regional logistics development.

Completing Interregional Transport and Logistics Infrastructure

Despite its advantageous geographical location, cargo throughput at Quang Tri’s seaports in recent years has not yet matched the province’s potential. This is due to inadequately dredged navigation channels. A lack of dry ports and logistics centers, and an underdeveloped logistics distribution network.

To address these bottlenecks, Quang Tri Province has focused on investing in transport infrastructure connecting seaports with economic zones and international border gates. During the 2025–2030 period, the province prioritizes the development of three strategic transport corridors:

  • National Highway 12A: connecting Hon La Port with Cha Lo International Border Gate

  • National Highway 9: connecting Cua Viet Port with Lao Bao International Border Gate

  • National Highway 15D: connecting My Thuy Port with La Lay International Border Gate

Among these, National Highway 15D is considered the shortest route with gentle gradients, making it particularly suitable for heavy cargo transportation.

New Momentum for a North Central Logistics Hub

The issuance of a Circular by the Ministry of Construction defining the seaport waters of Quang Tri into four key areas—Hon La, Cua Gianh, Cua Viet, and My Thuy. Has contributed to completing the legal framework, improving management efficiency, and ensuring maritime safety.

According to leaders of the Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee. The administrative merger has helped expand the marine economic development space. Strengthen regional connectivity, and reduce fragmented competition. As the province’s socio-economic scale expands and cargo volumes increase. Quang Tri is gradually positioning itself as a major logistics and cargo transshipment center for the North Central region and the East–West Economic Corridor.
